Music and Action Sports go together like thunder and lightning. They were made for each other - by each other - every since the early days of skateboarding when Jan and Dean invited a hip, young generation to "Grab your board and go sidewalk surfin' with me!" In the 70’s and 80’s, as skating became more hardcore, bands like Black Flag, TSOL and later The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Social Distortion were the soundtrack. The band members were skaters themselves, writing lyrics about the things that inspired them. In the 90’s, The Warped Tour and MTV’s Sports and Music Festival celebrated the marriage of music and action sports by showcasing live bands and vert ramps in the same venue. It was a natural relationship. Skaters wanted to be rock stars. Rock stars wanted to be skate celebrities.
And the relationship is just as strong and synergistic today. Tas Pappas’ Gudamunkas, Jesse Fritsch’s Operatic, Steve Caballero’s Faction, and Mike Vallely’s Mike V and the Rats are just a few of the bands that have grown out of the skaters’ passion to express themselves artistically. The LG Action Sports Championships is proud to support the tradition of sport and music. The Championships brings together the music from the 2004 Mobile Skatepark Series, which tapped into the vas talent of each market the MSS visited, combined with local Los Angeles musicians. The bands on stage and on-air in the TV shows represent a culmination of talent whose music inspires the skaters to create and push their sports.
