Ryan Nyquist |
All Hail King Nyquist!
September 11, 2004
It was standing-room only in the bleachers for the
bike park competition. All the stars were in top form
as Dave Mirra, Ryan Nyquist, Alistair Whitton and
twenty other riders from around the world dropped in
for prelims. After Dave’s double gold medal streak at
X Games, it looked like an open and shut case for the
Miracle Man, and since Nyquist injured his knee riding
street only two days ago, it looked as though only
Whitton might stand in his way.
Australian born Colin Mackay sailed around the
course, sticking a 360 whip over the box and a 540
tail tap. Morgan Wade threw the biggest gap on the
course, easily twenty feet from quarter pipe to a
transition down the side of the launch box. Then, he
stuck a corkscrew flair transfer straight into a 720
off the moto jump. He narrowly missed beating Steve McCann , whose barspin backflip and lookback 720 over
the spine had the crowd on their feet.
Corey Martinez pulled one of the best tricks of the
day, a 180 transfer over the handrail to fakie, and
Mike Aitken gets honorable mention for his 180 over
the box, which he pulled straight into a fakie 360 on
the quarter. His score was tied with Chris Doyle, who
nailed a fifteen foot transfer to manual on the ledge
and a barspin to turndown transfer.
The bronze medal was easily taken by 17 year old
Scotty Cranmer , who stuck a massive double whip
transfer, a 720 over the box and a 360 whip over the
spine. The silver went to Alistair Whitton with his
downside whip 360 over the box and turndown backflip
over the box.
And Ryan Nyquist easily walked away with the gold
medal for his first run, which included a one-handed
X-up, a back flip transfer, a double truck driver 540,
a 720 over the box and an unbelievable suicide
no-handed 360 over the spine.
So what happened to Mirra? In his first run, he
bombed into the course, nailed a whip transfer and
launched into a massive flair on the quarter pipe. Unfortunately, he got too far over the deck and landed sprocket, tumbling to the flat and breaking his hand. He waved to the crowd but couldn’t do his second run so ended in 10th.
From start to finish, the action never stopped on the
park course. It has to be seen to be believed, so keep
your eyes on the Fox Sports programming schedule for BMX Park!
